Exceptional Crimson Lightning Photographed in the Atmosphere

A group of photography enthusiasts operating in New Zealand have successfully captured images of “red sprites”, among the least common light phenomena globally, during which glowing scarlet illuminations manifest in the atmosphere.

A Remarkable Night of Discovery

The photographers had originally set out to capture the night sky over the Ōmārama Clay cliffs in the South Island of the country on a specific autumn evening, before encountering the extraordinary event.

Initially believing they would be blessed to get good weather that after-dark period, but their shooting session turned into “an unforgettable one,” an individual involved stated.

“He was checking his images for a Milky Way panorama and realized he had recorded crimson electrical bursts,” the individual explained. “We just could not believe it – it resulted in excited exclamations and numerous expressions in the dark.”

Defining Red Sprites

The scarlet phenomena are electrical discharges in the mesosphere, generated by storm systems. Unlike conventional electrical strikes that strikes downward to the surface, these events ascend towards the mesospheric region, producing structures that resemble vertical forms, tapered shapes or even bell-shaped organisms. The first photograph of a red sprite was recorded – accidentally – in that year, by a group at the University of Minnesota.

Fleeting and Ethereal Sightings

The phenomena last for such a short time – enduring only a thousandth of a second – that they are seldom seen to the naked eye, but an individual got lucky. “By chance, I was gazing straight toward a sprite when it happened – pure chance looking at the appropriate section of the sky and I observed a brief red flash,” he explained.

Observing the phenomena was a goal for this individual, an honored night scape photographer. “It looks like you’re seeing an impossible sight, it appears mystical … the color is a profound crimson that is there for a split second, so it is captivating to see.”

Skill-Based and Artistic Mastery

Capturing a such an event demands a expertise in technical photography, as well as an familiarity with atmospheric physics and innovative thinking, he said. “This is a highly complex category of art that’s very rewarding as well.”

Another photographer said it was counted as the “most incredible evenings” of his existence. “I witnessed the Milky Way glowing above the distant edge while these massive crimson strands of energy swayed above a storm hundreds of kilometres away,” he said.

An Exceptional Photographic Achievement

As far as he knows, there are no other images capturing scarlet electrical bursts and the southern hemisphere Milky Way in one frame.

“This was a singular occasion when you realize you are seeing a phenomenon you are unlikely to ever witness again.”
